13 imagesIndia On Two Wheels Gregg Bleakney's "India on Two Wheels" project was initially conceived on assignment at the 2010 Tour of Mumbai for VeloNews Magazine. During the pre-race Cyclothon, he met some of the city's Dabba Wallah delivery cyclists and became fascinated by the country's cycling culture. After the race, he postponed his return flight home, rented a bicycle and mini-van, and self-funded a two-month photo-tour around India--making over 16,000 portraits of cyclists. Gregg considers India's 300 million "common man" cyclist a cultural treasure at risk of extinction because of the emergence of a new class of inexpensive motorcycles. By partnering with the Tour of Mumbai and ID Sports for this exhibition, he hopes to help preserve and share this fascinating bike culture while encouraging future bicycle transportation, health, and sport initiatives in India.

29 imagesAfter witnessing the crazy press hordes, photographers shouting at each other, and tales of being elbowed in the face at the finish line pit, I decided that the press pass for the Tour de France that allows "behind the scenes" access wasn't really so "behind the scenes" after all. I like my freedom to roam and since this freedom is effectively restricted in the press area, I decided to scrap my press pass and big cameras to wonder around outside the lines and shoot 2011 Tour de France w/ an iPhone--as a fan/spectator. My goal was to convey what it's like to be a "normal person" without a press pass at the Tour de France. How close can a fan get to the athletes, what's the vibe, and how fun, wacky, wild is it (fans are much more chill than the media)?

82 images- Inside the 2009 Tour of Colombia Cycling Stage Race. The Vuelta is likely the most grueling cycling stage race in the world. Only 3 foreign racers have ever claimed an overall victory since the race's inception in 1951. Stages slice across the northernmost spine of the Andes, often climbing and descending over 10,000 feet in one day--from snowcapped peaks to sweltering tropical lowlands. Gregg Bleakney followed team Colombia es Pasion through all 15 stages. - La Vuelta a Colombia 2009 de ciclismo, Bogota, Cali, Medellin, Bogota--Colombia es Pasion.

44 imagesIn 2005, I made a choice to go car-free in favor of using a bicycle as my primary source of mobility. And, every time I saddle up I'm 100% thrilled to be living this two-wheeled lifestyle. But...what if I didn't have this choice? I spent 2.5 months on photojournalism assignments in India earlier this year and discovered there are an estimated 300 million Indian people who ride bicycles because they have no other option. I couldn't help but wonder, "If cycling was NOT something I did by choice, but was designated by the caste I was born into, would I still love it the same?" To explore that question, I made 16,000 photos, (most of them portraits) of Indian cyclists: brick makers from the untouchable caste, milk deliverymen, paper delivery boys, homeless children, farmers, mystics, popsicle salesmen, slum dwellers, and more. This gallery includes some of my favorites...and keep in mind the one thing all of these people have in common--cycling is their only choice. Cheers, Gregg

39 imagesCultural cycling images before the inaugural Tour of Beijing. Stage 1 ITT coverage. Stage 2 to follow. The Tour of Beijing has been organized by the UCI and ASO (governing body of cycling and Tour de France) at the request of Beijing's Mayor. It's the biggest and most controversial new cycling event in many years because its formation is the result of a political alliance between China and the Governing body of cycling itself--which required all pro-teams of a certain caliber to send their athletes to the event. Major professional bike races are almost alway developed and promoted by private marketing groups. The Tour de France/UCI group hopes that the race will open the floodgates to new sponsorship from Asia and help raise awareness for the sport beyond-Europe/USA. For the Chinese, the race plays into Beijing's new green agenda that is promoting bike culture in the city. It also maintains employment activity for sports organizing committee staff groups initially set up for the Olympic Games-they need new sports-related projects to work on.
