  • Day 2 - Near Lenzerheide, flat valley in 3,500 feet climbing. - The author's friend and guide, Horst Hammerschmidt, pedals along an alpine valley in (XXXXX) during day two of their 10-day, 525-mile horseshoe-shaped loop over the country's highest passes. At the top of each climb, the duo rewarded themselves with a scrumptious dessert and dubbed the trip, "sweet passes."

Horst Hammerschmidt climbs a rung of switchbacks on (xxx) pass during the author's "sweet passes" tour.  Over 10-days, the pair racked up 55,000 feet of vertical gain over the country’s 14 most iconic passes on fully loaded touring bikes.

  • The Swiss National Bike Route is fully signed at every intersection. During stage 5, I had the good fortune of linking up for a spin with this local--in addition to proudly sporting the country's most un-hip socks, he was also a former Bike Network volunteer trail manager.

  • Using SwissTrails, cyclists can ditch their luggage in their hotel lobby on the way out the door each morning and enjoy a point-to-point bike tour along the National Bike Network without carrying heavy panniers.  A convenient shuttle service transports baggage to the next hotel on the itinerary by day’s end.
