  • The Swiss National Bike Route is fully signed at every intersection. During stage 5, I had the good fortune of linking up for a spin with this local--in addition to proudly sporting the country's most un-hip socks, he was also a former Bike Network volunteer trail manager.

  • Bendel - The Swiss National Bike Network includes nine cross-country road bike routes with 82 local and regional trails covering 9,000 kilometers.  It's fully signed.  Maps and GPS coordinates can be purchased through www.swisstrails.ch and bikeswitzerland.com.

  • Using SwissTrails, cyclists can ditch their luggage in their hotel lobby on the way out the door each morning and enjoy a point-to-point bike tour along the National Bike Network without carrying heavy panniers.  A convenient shuttle service transports baggage to the next hotel on the itinerary by day’s end.

  • Swiss trains not only allows bicycles, each has a special bike parking zone for cyclists.  These steeds are hanging in the Unesco World Heritage Train en route to Davos--the base of stage 7's climb up 2383m Fluelapass.

  • Leipheimer at the start of a stage he won't likely ever forget.  In the moments before departure he seemed both focused and relaxed.  After realizing that he was still wearing his warm-up jacket, and that his team soigners had left him alone to prepare for the start he joked, "Hey, I think my team just ditched me."  He asked a race official to take his jacket to the RadioShack chase car and TTed his way into GC victory by a scant 4 seconds.

He finished fourth in the uphill sprint won by Borut Bozic.  He also finished second to Fabian Cancellara in the race's opening  prologue and is rumored to have been tapped for the HTC TDF squad.

His second place finish on this stage bumped him up to GC 5th--1:59 behind race leader Damiano Cunego.  This day proved to be a critical one for Leipheimer, as he managed this sub-two-minute time gap until the race's final TT in Schaffhausen.  There, his spectacular TT landed him the overall GC victory by 4 seconds over Cunego.

  • Day 2 - Near Lenzerheide, flat valley in 3,500 feet climbing. - The author's friend and guide, Horst Hammerschmidt, pedals along an alpine valley in (XXXXX) during day two of their 10-day, 525-mile horseshoe-shaped loop over the country's highest passes. At the top of each climb, the duo rewarded themselves with a scrumptious dessert and dubbed the trip, "sweet passes."

  • Day 2 - Abula Pass - 5,500 feet climbing. The National Bike Network is intelligently integrated with the Swiss train system.  For 10 USD (need to confirm 2013 price), in addition to passenger fare, a cyclist can put their bike on any train in the system.  In 2011, the author used both trains and his bicycle to cover the Tour de Suisse cycling race carbon free--ie. without using a car or motorcycle to follow the peloton.  Abula Pass

Nearly three time as fast as average spped of touring bike on similar route.  <br />

Horst Hammerschmidt climbs a rung of switchbacks on (xxx) pass during the author's "sweet passes" tour.  Over 10-days, the pair racked up 55,000 feet of vertical gain over the country’s 14 most iconic passes on fully loaded touring bikes.
