  • Day 2 - Near Lenzerheide, flat valley in 3,500 feet climbing. - The author's friend and guide, Horst Hammerschmidt, pedals along an alpine valley in (XXXXX) during day two of their 10-day, 525-mile horseshoe-shaped loop over the country's highest passes. At the top of each climb, the duo rewarded themselves with a scrumptious dessert and dubbed the trip, "sweet passes."

He finished fourth in the uphill sprint won by Borut Bozic.  He also finished second to Fabian Cancellara in the race's opening  prologue and is rumored to have been tapped for the HTC TDF squad.

  • Day 2 - Abula Pass - 5,500 feet climbing. The National Bike Network is intelligently integrated with the Swiss train system.  For 10 USD (need to confirm 2013 price), in addition to passenger fare, a cyclist can put their bike on any train in the system.  In 2011, the author used both trains and his bicycle to cover the Tour de Suisse cycling race carbon free--ie. without using a car or motorcycle to follow the peloton.  Abula Pass

Nearly three time as fast as average spped of touring bike on similar route.  <br />

Horst Hammerschmidt climbs a rung of switchbacks on (xxx) pass during the author's "sweet passes" tour.  Over 10-days, the pair racked up 55,000 feet of vertical gain over the country’s 14 most iconic passes on fully loaded touring bikes.
